Academic Assessment Process

Overview

Any Applicant who does not hold an undergraduate university degree accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB) must go through the Academic Assessment process, unless they are currently registered with another Canadian Engineering or Geoscience association, in which case they should apply to APEGM through the Inter-Association Mobility process instead.

Since geoscientists have no equivalent to the CEAB, all geoscience applicants whether foreign-trained or domestically trained, must go through an assessment process. Those with Canadian geoscience bachelor's degrees go through a slightly modified version of the assessment process called the Canadian Geoscience Assessment process.

Note that technician or technologist degrees or diplomas alone are not sufficient and will be rejected.

See the Academic Assessment process flowchart for more information about the Academic Assessment process. See the Canadian Geoscience Assessment process flowchart for more information about the Geoscience Assessment process. We also maintain a list of Frequently Asked Questions.

Assessment Process

The Assessment Process is generally not quick. APEGM requires a lot of documentation - including the degree certificates, transcripts, resume, and application. Once this documentation and the assessment fee are received, they are reviewed by our Assessment Officer to make sure that everything is in order.

Once all documentation has been received in good order it is reviewed by APEGM and in most cases, exams are assigned. APEGM uses the Canadian Engineering Qualification Board's (CEQB) syllabi as the local benchmark for academic qualification.

If you are assigned exams, you often have a variety of options available to satisfy your requirements. National exam sessions are held twice a year, typically in Spring and Winter. You can arrange to write one or two exams per session through the Assessment Officer.

The goal of this Assessment Process is to determine if you are Academically Qualified for Registration and when your date of Academic Qualification is. These are required prior to applying for the Pre-Registration Program. Your date of Academic Qualification may end up being the date of your Bachelor's degree, the date of a subsequent degree, or possibly the date of your last exam.

Approximately two weeks after the review, you will get your result by mail. With your assessment you are given a projected date of completion for writing the exams. If it does not appear that you will be able to write all the exams in time, you may submit a request to the Academic Review Committee (ARC) to have your 'Complete By:' date extended. They will evaluate this on a case by case basis.
