Since there is no recognized Geoscience Accreditation body in Canada, similar to the CEAB, all geoscience degrees and degrees related to geoscience must be assessed by APEGM prior to your application to the MIT program.
In order to be eligible for a Canadian Gesocience assessment, you must have a four year degree in geoscience from a Canadian University, or the equivalent (three year) degree from Quebec. All other geoscience-related degrees must go through a full Academic Assessment.
For some background information on professional registration of the geosciences, please review this presentation. See the Geoscience Assessment process flowchart for additional information.
To begin the Geoscience Assessment Process you must submit a completed application, along with all relevant documentation, to the Assessment Officer.
After your information is received in good order, your educational history will be compared to the accepted syllabus for your field of study in Manitoba. Exams will be assigned based on the gaps between your syllabus and our accepted syllabus. There is a separate syllabus for geology and geophysics.
You may review the self-assessment checksheets for geology and geophysics.
If you are assigned exams, you often have a variety of options available to satisfy your requirements. National exam sessions are held twice a year, typically in Spring and Winter. You can arrange to write one or two exams per session through the Assessment Officer.
The goal of this Assessment Process is to determine if you are Academically Qualified for Registration and when your date of Academic Qualification is. These are required prior to enrolling as a Member-In-Training. Your date of Academic Qualification may end up being the date of your Bachelor's degree, the date of a subsequent degree, or possibly the date of your last exam.
Please download a Canadian Geoscience Assessment application. Note that normally only transcripts are required in addition to the fee and application, but APEGM may request additional information as necessary.
The Assessment Officer is responsible for receiving all documentation related to the Canadian Geoscience Assessment process as well as coordinating exam schedules. He/she also provides secretariat for the Academic Review Committee (ARC), schedules interviews, and along with the Director of Admissions, assists in the interview process.
