A Brief History of Professional
Engineering and Geoscience
Milestones in Manitoba

On March 19, 1896 the Manitoba Legislature was the first in Canada to pass an act respecting the regulation of the profession of engineering. The Manitoba Civil Engineers Act made provision to create a Society similar to the structure of the current Association, with protection of the public the uppermost concern.

March 27, 1920 saw the passing of the Engineering Profession Act, creating the Association of Professional Engineers of the Province of Manitoba (APEM). On June 29, 1998 the legislature passed The Engineering and Geoscientific Professions Act creating the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of the Province of Manitoba (APEGM); and, bringing the regulation of professional geoscientists under the Association. In March 2010, APEGM will celebrate its 90th anniversary.
