As professionals, engineers and geoscientists take responsibility for their work. If their work subsequently fails, they may be held legally liable (personally) for any resulting costs or damages. Unless they have ample professional liability insurance they may be forced to pay thousands of dollars in damages and legal fees from their own pockets.
Effective April 1, 2013, the Secondary Professional Liability Insurance Program has enhanced coverage for both member coverage ($250,000 per claim plus defense costs) and aggregate per project ($500,000). This program is a tool to assist the licensing bodies in their mandate to uphold and protect the safety and interests of the public and environment. A key element enables engineers and geoscientists to fulfill their role of protection of the public through the ability to seek advice in whistle blower situations. Engineers Canada manages this program on behalf of its constituent associations.
As a member in good standing with APEGM, you are automatically enrolled in the National Secondary Professional Liability Insurance Program. This program provides insurance for your individual liability arising out of professional services that you may provide. Frequently Asked Questions (french).
APEGM Members and members-in-training are advised to familiarize themselves with the details of the policy. Review the Certificate of Insurance (french) on the plan, and the Policy Declaration (french).
