2006 Celebrity Competition
The Celebrity Competition got underway at the St. Vital Mall following the kick-off to the 2006 PEGW. There were three celebrity teams competing for cash prizes which they could donate to charities of their choice. Competitors were the CBC-TV News Team, City-TV Team, and the University of Manitoba Faculty of Engineering Design Team. This year's competition consisted of the teams building a crane from identical materials kits. The entries were judged on the maximum lifting capacity of the cranes.
City-TV won the crane-building contest. Their crane was able to lift and move (with a little help from their team) 47 lbs. The Grand Prize of $600 goes to their charity of choice - The Children's Hospital Foundation of Manitoba.
The CBC-TV News team came in second with their crane lifting 27.6 lbs. Their prize of $300 will go to Winnipeg Harvest.
The UofM Faculty of Engineering Design Team's crane had a cable failure (their string broke) at 27 lbs. As the rules did not allow for repairs, they had to settle for third place. Their prize of $100 will go to the Breast Cancer Society of Canada. After re-stringing their crane, the Design Team's crane was able to lift and move 64 lbs.
