PEGW 2009: Manitoba Events

Winnipeg Events

• PEGW 2009 in Winnipeg was held at the Kildonan Place Shopping Centre from Friday March 6th through Sunday March 8th, 2009 with activities / activités for everyone.
• Provincial Proclamation of Engineering & Geoscience Week
  At 10:00 a.m. Friday March 6th, centre court of Kildonan Place hosted the kick-off of PEGW activities with the Proclamation of Provincial Engineering and Geoscience Week by a member of the Provincial Government; the Associate Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Manitoba; the President of Consulting Engineers of Manitoba; and, the President of APEGM.
• Celebrity Competition
  Friday March 6, immediately following the Goverment Proclamation, featured a Celebrity Competition where local celebrity teams competed by Soaring for Charity. A description of the event along with guidelines and judging criteria for contestants may be found in the official contest rules. The celebrity teams competed for $1,000 in prize money to be awarded to the charity of each team's choice.
• Spaghetti Bridge Competition
  Saturday, March 7th featured the ever popular Spaghetti Bridge Building Contest. The Spaghetti Bridge competition was open to all school children. Contestants were required to follow specific contest rules/règles. To enter the contest in 2009, you could register on line or download the entry form as a PDF file (english/français) and mail or fax the completed form to the address on the form.
• Sunday March 8th, from noon to 4:00 pm, PEGW hosted a variety of engineering and geoscience related activities for children at centre court of Kildonan Place. Particpants were able to learn how to make "floating concrete", build a structure of gum-drops, or build and test the strength of a straw-bridge.
• Other activities during the the three days included displays featuring engineering and geoscience activities in Manitoba; information on the engineering & geoscience programs at the University of Manitoba, as well as the opportunity to speak with people working in the engineering and geoscience fields.

Brandon Events

• The APEGM Westman Chapter held its 6th Annual Spaghetti Bridge Competition from March 2 - 4, 2009 in conjunction with the Faculty of Engineering, University of Manitoba display at the Brandon Career Symposium at the Keystone Centre in Brandon.
• On March 17, 2009 the APEGM Westman Chapter will provide judges for the Western Manitoba Science Fair, also held at the Keystone Centre.
