March 2010 is the 90th Anniversary of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Manitoba. Please come on out to the Kildonan Place Shopping Centre (March 5, 6 & 7, 2010) to celebrate these professions and learn how they have contributed to the growth and prosperity of Manitoba.
Come out the morning of Friday March 5th to watch teams of local celebrities compete in the Celebrity Competition to build and test an engineering project for charity. The celebrity teams compete for $2,000 in prize money to be awarded to the charity of each team's choice. This competition kicks-off the activities celebrating engineering and geoscience week at Kildonan Place.
Saturday will feature the ever popular Spaghetti Bridge Building Competition. The competition is open to all school children. The goal is to see whose bridge will support the heaviest load. The competition is a fun event giving the opportunity for students, teachers and parents to get involved in 'hands on engineering'. In addition to the $1,000 in prize money up for grabs by the students, the engineers of Manitoba want to expand the event to be a meaningful charity event for the whole community. Therefore, APEGM, in partnership with Canada Safeway, Investors Group, and its corporate engineering supporters, will make a pasta donation to Winnipeg Harvest equal to the cumulative weight supported by all entries in the Winnipeg Spaghetti Bridge Competition. Our goal is to donate 10,000 pounds of pasta to Winnipeg Harvest in support of the community.
Spaghetti Bridge contestants are required to follow specific contest rules. To enter the competition, please register online or download the paper entry form and submit the completed form to APEGM by Friday March 5th.
On Sunday, volunteers will host a variety of engineering and geoscience related activities for children from noon to 4:00 pm. Children and their parents will have the opportunity to learn how to make “floating concrete”, build a structure of gum-drops, or build and test the strength of a straw-bridge.
Other activities during the three days will include displays featuring engineering and geoscience activities in Manitoba; information on the engineering and geoscience programs at the University of Manitoba; and, the opportunity to speak with people working in the engineering and geoscience fields. Come out and help us celebrate APEGM's 90th anniversary, and the University of Manitoba's Department of Geological Sciences centenary.
The APEGM Westman Chapter will hold its annual Spaghetti Bridge Competition in conjunction with the Faculty of Engineering, University of Manitoba display at the Brandon Career Symposium (March 8-10th) at the Keystone Centre in Brandon.
On March 17th, the Westman Chapter will provide judges for the Western Manitoba Science Fair, also to be held at the Keystone Centre in Brandon.
National Engineering Month 2010 - Design the Future
Engineers create. They design structures so small you can't even see them
with your eyes, yet they also design huge structures like skyscrapers. They
mix their creative skills with math, sciences and technology to come up with
things that were once thought impossible. See how, with engineering, you
can design an amazing future.
