Spaghetti Bridge Competition – Saturday March 10th

Saturday will feature the ever popular Spaghetti Bridge Building Competition. The competition is open to all school children. The goal is to see whose bridge will support the heaviest load.

The competition is a fun event giving the opportunity for students, teachers and parents to get involved in “hands on engineering”. In addition to the $1,000 in prize money up for grabs by the students, the engineers of Manitoba have expanded the event to be a meaningful charity event for the whole community.

APEGM will make a pasta donation to Winnipeg Harvest equal to the cumulative weight supported by all entries in the Winnipeg Spaghetti Bridge Competition. Last year, student bridges held a total of 9,377 pounds resulting in a matching donation of pasta to Winnipeg Harvest. This year, our hope is that the students who participate in the competition will reach the goal to donate 10,000 pounds of pasta to Winnipeg Harvest in support of the community.

Team Registration

Spaghetti Bridge contestants are required to follow specific contest rules with respect to the materials and dimensions of their bridges. Sign up for the competition and bring your bridges to Kildonan Place Shopping Centre on Saturday, March 10, 2012 for testing and destruction to see whose bridge will hold the most weight!

Competition for Grades 1 to 6 starts at 10:00 am. Award ceremony to follow immediately.
Competition for Grades 7 to 12 starts at 12:30 pm. Award ceremony to follow immediately.

Please get your registration information to APEGM by Friday, March 9th.

Children’s Activities – Sunday March 11th

On Sunday, volunteers will host a variety of engineering and geoscience related activities for children from noon to 4:00 pm. Children and their parents will have the opportunity to learn how to make “floating concrete”, build a structure of gum-drops, or build and test the strength of a straw-bridge.

Other Activities – March 10th & 11th

Other activities during the two days will include displays featuring engineering and geoscience activities in Manitoba; information on the engineering and geoscience programs at the University of Manitoba; and, the opportunity to speak with people working in the engineering and geoscience fields.
