Pre-Graduation Work Experience

In June of 1999, this Association adopted a policy for accepting and evaluating exceptional Pre-Graduation Work Experience.

The intent of this policy is to recognize the significant work experience obtained by students in certain co-op and internship programs prior to their graduation from university. It may not include all co-op assignments or internship positions, and it is not normally intended to include normal summer employment.

If you believe that you obtained significant, engineering/geoscience level work experience that meets the definition of Acceptable Engineering or Geoscience Work Experience prior to graduation, and if that experience was obtained under the supervision of a registered professional member who is prepared to vouch for that experience and take professional responsibility for it, this new policy may apply to you.

APEGM will accept pre-academic-qualification work experience which satisfies the definition of acceptable engineering work experience or acceptable geoscientific work experience under the supervision of a registered professional member who takes responsibility for the work, as follows:

  1. To a maximum of 12 months for:
    1. university graduates who have work experience obtained following the completion of one-half of the university program, on work terms of a minimum of three consecutive months' duration, and
    2. confirmatory examination candidates who have been declared academically qualified as of the date of their undergraduate degree.

  2. Normally, to a maximum of 12 months -- but with the potential to a maximum of 24 months where the MIT is deemed to have exceptional engineering/geoscience work experience, based upon an extensive interview or an in-depth review of the MIT's documented credentials by a minimum of two professional members who have expertise in the area of practice for which the MIT has submitted credentials, for:
    1. confirmatory examination candidates who have been declared academically qualified as of a date later than their undergraduate degree,
    2. candidates who also hold technologist qualifications, and
    3. candidates who have experienced extensive interruption in obtaining their degree and who have gained exceptional engineering/geoscience work experience prior to the completion of their degree.

  3. To a maximum of 48 months prior to completion of the proficiency examination program -- at least 12 months of which must be acceptable work experience in a Canadian work environment, and which may include work experience while enrolled in the APEGM proficiency examination program as well as work experience previously gained under the supervision of a recognized professional practitioner subsequent to obtaining a "non-recognized" engineering or geoscience degree, for:
    1. proficiency examination candidates.

At an absolute minimum, your pre-graduation work experience must have included the application of theory, and you must list the subject areas of your academic background in which the experience was obtained. And it must have been obtained within four years of your having enrolled with APEGM as a MIT.

No professional development hours or professional service hours are required to have been earned during the period of acceptable pre-graduation work experience. Also, if you have earned professional development or professional service hours during this period - THEY WILL NOT BE COUNTED, so do not remit professional development or volunteer service tables for pre-grad time periods.

To cover the cost of the associated additional administration, and to minimize the number of frivolous applications, an administration fee of $53.50 (including GST) must accompany the application, unless you are an active Student Member in good standing, in which case this fee is Waived. Please use the MIT Progress Report Form to claim for this experience. Complete one form for each position held - it is not necessary to submit in 6 month increments. You should also submit a completed Application for Evaluation of Pre-Graduation Work Experience with the administration fee.
