APEGM's mandate is to produce engineers and geoscientists who have been exposed to a wide range of skills. For that reason, it is important for MITs to make sure they address ALL aspects of their engineering or geoscience experience in their progress reports at some point during their 48 month program. Please refer to the following attached documents:
To claim for experience, MITs AND their professional member supervisors must complete progress reports outlining their experience. Generally, MITs will complete one report, submit this report to APEGM, and submit a copy of their report to their supervisor who will then remit to APEGM. If it is possible, MITs and supervisors may do the report together and submit as one - however, MITs are cautioned that there are deadlines for reports to be received, so it is ABSOLUTELY important that the report reach our office on or before the deadline. See Pre-Registration Program Compliance below for details.
Once both the MIT report and the supervisor report arrive in our office, these will be placed on the agenda of the Experience Review Committee (ERC). The Experience Review Committee is a group of volunteer APEGM members who represent a wide variety of engineering and geoscience disciplines. Each MIT file is sent to a reviewer who is of the same or similar discipline to the MIT. The reviewer then brings back a recommendation to the ERC at the next meeting. In order to be considered on the agenda for an ERC meeting, both the MIT report and the supervisor portion must be received in our office approximately one and a half weeks prior to the actual meeting. The deadline can vary from month to month depending on the file load. If necessary, you may email the APEGM Admissions Coordinator to find out when the next cut-off date is.
The ERC typically reviews 90 to 100 files per month and EVERY file is read carefully, so it is very important to make sure that the progress reports are completed to the best of your ability.
While APEGM staff makes every effort not to delay files, sometimes delays are inevitable. If reviewers are suddenly unable to review files, sometimes we have no choice but to defer a file until the next month. Files that are going for First-time registration always take the highest priority, so this may mean that files which are not first-time, may periodically get bumped. We ask for your patience when unavoidable delays occur.
Since the APEGM Pre-Registration Program is mandatory for those who are living and working in Manitoba, there are administrative penalties for failing to submit reports on time. There are two types of administrative sanctions: late sanctions - for reports that are received late, and pre-enrolment sanctions - for reports that claim for time earned while not enrolled on the pre-registration program.
To calculate late time, APEGM does the following:
To calculate the late time fee, APEGM multiplies the number of months that are late by the late fee.
Pre-enrolment time is a little more complicated - it is defined as time which is claimed prior to three months prior to the date of enrolment as an MIT. So, if an MIT enrolled on April 1, 2008, and submitted a progress report, if that progress report contained time prior to January 1, 2008, then there would be pre-enrolment time on the report. Pre-enrolment is calculated to be the cumulation of the late fee + the monthly fee which the MIT should have paid if he/she was on the pre-registration program.
There are many situations where late fees will NOT apply. For example, applicants who have come from the assessment program are invited to submit reports on time earned while on the assessment program. Late fees will not apply in this case. MITs coming from different universities who do not have similar pre-registration programs also will not have late fees applied, if they were working outside of Manitoba at the time.
If you wish to understand late fees, pre-enrolment fees, and pre-grad fees in more detail, please review these late and pre-enrolment fee sample diagrams.
If you wish to hand in a report that has pre-enrolment time or late time associated with it, complete the regular progress report that you would normally - 1 report per place of employment. Do not submit in six month increments if it's after the fact. APEGM will review the report, then we will send you an invoice AFTERWARD.
APEGM does recognize that there are many different situations where applicants may have worked outside of Manitoba for some time, or where people may have come in from other countries. We will not, of course, apply penalties to applicants who would not have been able to comply with APEGM rules prior to starting the APEGM program!
APEGM will normally recognize up to 12 months of Pre-graduation experience - this is experience which is earned prior to the date of graduation, or in the case of assessment applicants, the date of academic qualification.
The Admissions Coordinator provides secretariat to the Experience Review Committee by receiving Progress Reports, sending files to reviewers, setting the ERC agenda, and taking minutes at the ERC meetings.
